The filmmaker spoke openly about his parents’ religion during an interview with Rediff. Actually, Mahesh Bhatt is known for speaking openly about his personal life. During this, Mahesh Bhatt revealed many things and also talked about giving Muslim names to his two daughters Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt.
Mahesh Bhatt told that his father Nanabhai Bhatt was a Gujarati Brahmin and mother Shirin Mohammad Ali was a Muslim. He recalled the time when his mother was a little embarrassed because Mahesh Bhatt had named his daughters flaunting his Muslim roots. Mahesh Bhatt said that his mother was upset when he gave Muslim names to his daughters Alia and Shaheen Bhatt.
Mahesh Bhatt’s parents were from different religions
During an old interview, Mahesh Bhatt had said, I have the two best things in the world – my parents. My mother was a Shia Muslim, while my father was a Janeudhari Brahmin. However, he never pretended to be secular. The most interesting thing is that both parents maintained their different beliefs in different religions. They loved each other very much, but neither of them worked in another religion and way, nor did they like to do so.
When mother was embarrassed for flaunting her Muslim roots
Mahesh Bhatt further said, ‘When the communal riots took place in Mumbai during 1992, my mother always wore a big tika and a sari. Although she liked to do such things. But I could see that she was hiding something. Actually she felt that her minority status might become a hindrance for our personal life. In such a situation, when I showed off my Muslim roots, she was a little embarrassed. However, I later came to know that she was embarrassed about this. She was worried about my children during the communal riots in 1992. During that time, we gave Muslim names to daughters Alia and Shaheen. Because my second wife Soni Razdan liked these names. In 1992, everyone was worried about what was going to happen.’
In 1970, Mahesh changed his first wife Lorraine Bright’s name to Kiran Bhatt. Mahesh Bhatt has two children with her – Rahul and Pooja Bhatt. He married actress Soni Razdan in 1986, with whom he has two daughters, Shaheen and Alia Bhatt.
